Bochum, Germany

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, W of Dortmundin the Ruhr, NW Germany. Chartered in 1298, it became part of the duchy of Kleve in 1641 and passed to Brand enburg in the early 17th century. Severely damaged in World War II, it is now a commercial and cultural center for the Ruhr.
